There are many different types of dolphins, and each type of dolphin has different physical features and characteristics.  The characteristics for some are shown below.

         

Pacific White-Sided Dolphin

Height: 7'6" 

This dolphin has a black back, white belly, and a white or light gray stripe.  There is a dark stripe between the corner of his mouth and flipper.

                                          

 

Atlantic White-Sided Dolphin

Height: 9'

The colors on the side of this dolphin may vary.  Its beak is small and black.

Common Dolphin

Height: 8'6"

The Common Dolphin is slender with a white chest and belly.  The beak is dark with a white tip.  The sides have an hourglass or crisscross pattern.

Rough Toothed Dolphin

Height: 8'

The color of this dolphin can be a dark gray to a dark purplish.  The sides are light gray and the belly is a light pink/white.  Its teeth are rough to the touch.

Bottlenosed Dolphin

Height: 12'

This dolphin's back is dark gray, and its sides are light gray.  The belly can be pink to white.

Spinner Dolphin

Height: 7'

The Spinner Dolphin is slender with a dark gray back.  The sides are a yellowish-tan and the belly is white.  This type of dolphin has a long beak.

Atlantic Spotted Dolphin

Height: 8'

The Atlantic Spotted Dolphin's sides and belly are a light gray to white with dark spots.  The spots increase with age.

Risso's Dolphin

Height: 13'

Did you know that the Risso's Dolphin's color lightens with age?  This dolphin has no distinct beak.

Clymene Dolphin

Height: 6'6"

The back is dark gray or black.  The sides are lighter and the belly is white.
