When a puppy is born they totally depend on their mother.  weighing less than a pound their eyes are not open and ,though this theory may be reversed with future research newly whelped puppies are thought to have limited capabilities of learning.  They react to the sent of their mom's milk, know how to suckle, and can cry, whimper, and growl.   

When a puppy reaches near 16  weeks the amazing thing happens bladder control!  It doesn't mean that the puppy won't have any accidents, and doesn't mean that you can trust them on your carpet, it just means that the puppy won't dribble when it is excited.  This also means that you will get a full night without waking up at 2:00 am.  Boxers are big chewers but puppy boxers are worse.  to make sure you have plenty of safe, indestructible chew toys for your dog. keep at lest 10 of those toys out went your home and away
