Though all the boys are great singers and friends today, not all of them knew each other until 1993. The band was formed in Orlando, Florida.

In 1993, Lou Pearlman decided that it was time to introduce a new guy group into the music scene. He quickly placed an add in the national newspapers looking for young, new talent. He quickly got the 5 guys together and he produced the group the BackStreet Boys.

Mercury Records signed the band in 1994 but quickly dropped them saying they weren't interested in the "guy group" thing. It was hard for them to get a label since most of them said the boy band thing was over.

Jive Records, a fairly new label, signed the group. In 1995, the released their first single, "We've Got it Goin On" . No one thought they could lose but they were wrong. The song only reached 69 on the charts.

Their first CD was released in 1997. Some of the top songs on this album include "Quit Playin Games", "As Long As You Love Me", and "Everybody". This CD sold 7 million copies.
