Backstroke is considered one of the more simpler strokes... why?  Because you don't have to ever coordinate your breathing. all you must be able to do is float on your back for one, and be able to rotate your shoulders in the water without moving you head and kicking your feet at the very same time.

As seen in this picture below, the start is one of the most critical points of your race.  You may either start off by holding the edge of the pool and arching your back into the water, or you may start by having you hands up on the hand railings above the edge of the pool and below the actual starting block.

Breathing..., breathing is another very very important part of the race, you must keep your head in the same position ( looking up ) during the whole race.  Stated for the second time.. you must rotate your shoulders so you can reach ahead of you into the water wand pull more of the water with less strokes causing you to go much faster than the swimmer who you are racing.  Another advantage is that you will be using less energy than you opponent, and will be going much faster.

Technique for backstroke is simple and easy enough to master, but you must have upper body strength.  Especially in your shoulders.  Also, if you do no stretch before you swim you could get critical injuries, such as a pulled muscle or as a long term consequence, you could get tendonitis. ( a disease of you muscle, and it takes a lot of  physical therapy to get rid of or in worst cases...just to stop the pain.

Backstroke is a pretty easy stroke to master. To swim backstroke you have to kick your feet hard and fast. They should be puncturing the surface of the water. When you kick, your feet shouldn't be far apart. Your arms should kind of go in a circle. When they exit the water, your thumbs should come out first, then enter the water pinky first. When your hand enters the water towards your body in a half circle.  Your left arm should be halfway out of the water when your right hand is at the starting position. Then continue the cycle. That is how you swim Backstroke.

The starts for backstroke are very easy, all you must be able to do is arch your back and hold your breathe long enough for you to be under the water for at least half the length of the pool.

Some stretches for backstroke are to rotate your arm in the back of your neck.  Or to reach your arms behind you head to touch tour other arm at the bottom of your neck... if you do not stretch, you have a great risk of hurting yourself permanently or jus for a small amount of time.
