Snowboarding began in the United States in the 1960's when Sherman Poppen invented the "snurfer" it is a simple boardwith a rope handle atached to its nose (Seen on the left). Snurfing as a sport was taken up by skier, surfer, and skateboarders enthusiasts who then started to improve on the idea.

Jake Burton Carpenter attached rubber foot straps to the boards. These early buildings had a major impact on snowboarding, it gave the snowboarders much more control. Jake Burton Carpenter  was a  former skateboard world champion.

Tom Sims, also started developing new boards , experimenting with different shapes and material. By late1970's snowboarding as it came to be called, was well on its way to becoming an established sport.

Skiers used to think snowboarders were just wild and crazy kids, but in 1981, with a steel edged board Jake Burton Carpenter won the the first snowboard championship which was held in the United States.

Many snowboarding  tricks were first done on skate boards like the one you see on the left.  That is why most people liked snowboards so much because they were so much like skateboards and surfing but in the winter.

A sport in the winter like skateboarding  and surfing that is mostly why snowboarding was created. Today snowboarding is one of the most popular snow sports.

Now snowboarding has media coverage and is bringing more skateboarders, surfers and even skiers who think that snowboarders are much more appealing ever since it became a official sport. Snow boarding is now in the Olympics.
