Hair Care Tips

Have you ever noticed that some people just have all the luck when it comes to hair.  Here are simple quick ways to improve the shine and strength of your hair. (esp. when you color it.)

Conditioners/Detanglers

  • For dry hair only, use a rich formula and a detangler.

  • For normal hair use a light conditioner and skip the detangler.

  • For oily hair skip the conditioner and use a detangler instead.

Products

  • Use products on wet hair.

  • Avoid using too many or too much of a product in your hair.

  • Try not to use hairspray unless to keep flyaways under control because "perfect" hair is not in style.

  • Don't shampoo your hair everyday. Allow your natural oils to condition your scalp and hair.

  • Choose your hairbrush carefully. Natural bristles are not for all types of hair. If you blow-dry your hair, the right sized brush (and shape) will simplify your job.

If you color your hair, use a shampoo that is designed for color-treated hair. If you have temporary color on your hair, the frequency of shampooing and the kind of shampoo you use will affect the color. Use a conditioner only if your hair needs it.

If you color your hair, the bottom line is--avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. In other words, wear a hat! Sun, chlorine and salt water all spell oxidation. One way to minimize this is to apply a leave-in conditioner on your hair. But not all conditioners are created equal. Check the ingredients.
Avoid 'green hair' before it begins. Thoroughly wet your hair before you dip in the pool and add a bit of conditioner too. Wash your hair immediately upon exiting the pool, BEFORE YOUR HAIR HAS A CHANCE TO DRY.

Another simple tip before you spend the day in the sun, is massage some of your sunscreen into your hair, it should wash out.

A clarifier is a stronger shampoo designed to remove toxins from you hair such as auto emissions and other environmental pollutants, as well as build up from some ingredients in over the counter shampoos such as silicon. A clarifier is too strong to use daily, but once or even twice a week is okay. It should also help remove chlorine from your hair, but if you are at the pool daily you will need to invest in a special shampoo to control chlorine.
  • Though not exactly a fashion statement, you can always wear a bathing cap too.
  • Bottom line, just leave your hair natural, or invest in a highlight. In the long run the highlight will be far less expensive than a color correction.
