Elendil,  high King of Gondor, and his son Isildur had joined forces to defeat Sauron in the Second age of Middle- earth.  The battle of Dargorlad was the bloodiest of them all in which Gil-galad and Elendil both died.  The Dark Lord was driven back all the way to the slopes of Mount. Doom.  It was here where he fell.  Isildur took up his father's sword and cut the hand  of Sauron that had the ruling Ring.
His power was lost and that was the end of the Second age.  Instead of destroying the One Ring, he decided to keep the Ring to see if he could use it for the good of his kingdom.  He declared that it should be a heirloom to Gondor and all those related to him would be bound to his fate.  So 3 thousand years later, in the Third age, his desendant Aragorn, heir to the Gondorian kingdom would have to destroy it.  But Isildur was attacked by Orcs at Gladden fields.  There he was killed and the Ring fell into the waters of Anduin. When he died, the race of men was kingless.  Never since he died, has Gondor taken up another King.  The race of men was scattered, divided and leaderless.
