

Hobbits live in what is called the Shire, a northeastern corner of Middle-earth. Hobbit's are quiet, kind people who never do anything out of the ordinary and unexpected. For hundreds of years, these small folk have lived well in the Shire with good soil and food. These people barely stand 4 feet tall. They are comfortable people who like to eat as much as they can. Here are some hobbits who play major roles in the story.
Bilbo Baggins

Bilbo
Baggins was one of the hobbits who practically started the whole thing
with the Ring being found. Bilbo had gone on a heroic
adventure with a wizard named Gandalf and many Dwarves. When he came
back to the Shire, he had the One Ring. He had won the Ring in a
riddle contest with a strange creature named Gollum.

| Bilbo loves songs and poems. He's a scholar, wears fancy waistcoats, tells great stories and is friends with the Elves. Bilbo had just finished a book called "There and Back Again." Bilbo decided to leave the Shire and go live with the Elves in a place called Rivendell. He left everything to Frodo Baggins. | ![]() |
Frodo Baggins
| Frodo Baggins was an orphaned hobbit and he called Bilbo "Uncle Bilbo." Frodo grew up with Bilbo and became a very serious, intelligent and even sensitive hobbit. He loves to study and listen to Bilbo's stories. Frodo loves the outdoors and always longed to go on a crazy and wild adventure with his uncle. When Bilbo left, he left Frodo his house and all of his possessions. These possessions happened to include this certain ring. | ![]() |

Frodo must
take this Ring to Mt. Doom and cast it into the fire to have it
destroyed. Carrying the Ring is a heavy burden on Frodo. It
constantly temps him in the black language of Mordor. The Ring wants
to return to it's master and whoever carries this Ring will be in consatnt
danger. But Frodo has some help. With the help from wizards,
elves, dwarves, men and good weapons, Frodo does remarkably well for a
hobbit.

Samwise Gamgee
| Samwise Gamgee is Frodo Baggins gardner and best friend. He had never traveled very far from home before. He was mesmorized by Bilbo's wonderful stories and tales. Sam goes with Frodo on his mission with the Ring. From there, he became part of the Fellowship. Sam is quiet and dependable and swears to stick by Frodo no matter what happens. Sam also has courage and loyalty to Frodo. He has stubborness which comes in handy when him and Frodo go through rough times. | ![]() |

Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took are also known as Merry and Pippen. Merry is a bright and cheerful hobbit, always looking for a good time. He's mischievous person; always telling jokes. Like most hobbits, he likes to eat, drink, and generally have a good time. He spends most of his time smoking pipe-weed which is his favorite pastime. Like Frodo, he loves adventure and is also part of the journey to destroy the Ring. |
| Pippen is the youngest of the four hobbits. He is second cousin to Frodo and is cousin's with Merry. Him and Merry are closest friends and when they're together, there is always trouble. He comes along as one of the Fellowship to help out his friends. But he didn't realize he might be getting in a little over his head in this dangerous quest. | ![]() |
