Shetland Sheepdogs are native to the Shetland islands off the Scottish coast. The Shetland islands have very strong winds and harsh climate. Livestock is a major industry there and the Shelties are great for herding because their small bodies can pick their way through the rugged terrain with a lesser chance of getting injured. |
| Shelties first came to America in 1911. A New York breeder imported some of the dogs and advertised them. |
