History

Shetland Sheepdogs are native to the Shetland islands off the Scottish coast. The Shetland islands have very strong winds and harsh climate. Livestock is a major industry there and the Shelties are great for herding because their small bodies can pick their way through the rugged terrain with a lesser chance of getting injured.
Shelties first came to America in 1911. A New York breeder imported some of the dogs and advertised them.

The American Shetland Sheepdog Association was organized in 1929. The association was produced to sponsor this breed in the United States.
