The Construction
The Hubble Space Telescope was constructed by engineers. They had to keep the telescope as clean as possible. To do this the engineers had to wear special suites especially created for making this project. |
The goal of the Hubble Space Telescope was to observe objects that couldn't be seen from Earth. This telescope is humongous compared to other satellites. Other instruments added to the Hubble were the size of a telephone booth or bigger. The instruments added included two spectrograms and two cameras. Spectrograms are instruments that help scientists study lights. And the cameras are there to help the scientists see the faint objects in space. |

Sure enough before the Hubble Space Telescope was launched the technicians found a problem in the primary mirror. The mirror was ground and polished incorrectly. |
Did you know that the Hubble Space Telescope cost 1.6 billion dollars?
Takeoff

This is a picture of the Hubble Space Telescope being released from the space shuttle Discovery into orbit in the year 1990. Discovery, one of NASA's space shuttles toke off on April 4,1990. Inside the shuttle is the Hubble Space Telescope. |
Did you know that all the equipment on the Hubble Space telescope can be taken off and replaced in space?
Servicing Missions
These are pictures of two astronauts Kathryn Thornton and Jeffrey Hoffman. They both worked on the Hubble during a servicing mission. And theses are pictures of them doing just that. Kathryn Thornton is working with a robotic arm and Jeffrey Hoffman is holding the very delicate Field Planetary during the replacement operations. |

Can you see the difference. The picture was dramatically improved after one of the Hubble's servicing missions. Without this servicing mission the picture on the left could never have been alike to the one on the right. |
