Most of the Japanese people wear Western style clothes, like jeans and a T-shirt. But some choose to wear the traditional kimono. A kimono is a floor-length robe made of silk that has many layers. It is held together by a sash at the waist that is tied at the back called an obi. Kimonos are very common in public. A person in jeans could be walking down the street with their friend in a kimono and it's considered normal. During festivals, kimonos can be seen everywhere. Festivals are a very special thing in Japanese culture, so the kimonos are usually elegant and very beautiful. About the only place kimonos are not worn are at school. Many of the schools have uniforms, or people wear a suit or jeans.
