Basketball all started with  Doctor James Naismith in the winter of 1891.  When the students of Springfield, Mass chutes got tired of regular  indoor gym activities they begged Dr. Naismith, their school director, to invent a new indoor game.  Although he only started out with two peach baskets, this sport would soon be loved worldwide.

When the students were getting started playing basketball, they used soccer balls and peach baskets that were attached to the lower rail of the gym balcony.  But if a team scored the janitor would be waiting on a  ladder to get the ball out of the basket.  To speed up the game holes were cut into the bottom of the baskets.

At first basketball was a very rough sport and was very disorganized.  A regular game took 20 points to win.  Before 1938 the court divided into three sessions.  Basketball was first included in the Olympics in 1936.

Today basketball is loved and played all over the world.
