Mogul skiing is known to most people as mogul skiing. However some few people just call them "bumps". Even though they are a lot of bumps that is a very unofficial name. The moguls are an extremely organized hill completely covered in large bumps.

The bumps are formed by the skiers. the ground underneath of them is flat. In order to make the bumps they have a steep hill and a large group of skiers. The people ski down the hill all turning in the same place. That piles up the snow into little mounds. Once the entire hill is cover in the bumps the skiers have a hill of moguls.
There are two different ways to go through the moguls. One way is to build up speed and one is to slow you down. If you are in a race then you would normally not use the slowdown possibility. However, if it is a freestyle race then you would want to slow down right before a jump.

If a skier wants to go fast then they start out by choosing a good path while they go up the hill. No matter what type of mogul skiing they are going to be doing. The skier then goes through and literally cuts the tops off. He or she skis towards the bump and then puts their skis on the edge of the bump facing downhill. This keeps the skis from slowing them down.
When a skier is nearing a bump they run their skis almost perpendicular to the ski slope. Their legs then pond into the side of the bump, thus slowing them down. Not only does this slow them down but it builds up the bump.

Most of the mogul competitions are called mogul freestyle. in these competitions the skiers are timed and they are judged by the quality of the tricks that they do. Because of these two qualities the skiers have to be able to not only ski down moguls going fast but also be able to slow down to the right speed.
You may be asking yourself, "Why do they slow down if it is a timed event?" the answer to that is quite simple. If the skier went as fast as they could the whole way down when they hit the jump the would go extremely far. That would be good however, the bumps start right back up after the jump. So they would not want to be launched into where the moguls start again that could cause serious injury or death.

Mogul skiing is the absolute most demanding type of skiing on the legs. If you want to be a mogul skier then you have to have extremely strong legs.
