A baseball field has an infield, and outfield, and a foul territory. the infield is a square area, usually dirt, with a base at each corner. Because the infield looks diamond-shaped for behind home plate, baseball fields are often called diamonds. The out field is a grassy section between the infield and the fence that borders the field. the size of the outfield varies from field to field. The infield and the outfield are fair territory, which is where the game is played. Four territory is the area outside the infield and outside the foul lines of the outfield. The foul lines are marked with white chalk. one line extend from each side of home plate to the fence. |

The positions- each of the nine fielders has an area of the field for which he or she is responsible. the pitcher is on the pitchers mound, throwing pitches. the catcher is behind home plate, catching pitches. together , the pitcher and catcher are called a teams battery. The first baseman, second baseman, and third baseman all play near their bases. the shortstop plays between the second and third bases. these four players are infielders. The outfielders are spread across the outfield. the leftfielder is between second and third base. the centerfielder plays behind second base, and the right fielder is between the 1st and second bases.
When a team is batting the players on that team bat in an assigned order, called the lineup. the manager decides on the order. the player who is batting is "up." The next player to bat is "on deck," and the player following him or her is "in the hole." Coaches near first base and third base help the base runners decide when to run.

An umpire calls balls and strikes from behind home plate. the umpire also makes sure the other rules of the game are followed. if there are two or more umpires, the additional umpires are stationed around the bases to rule on whether base runners are safe or out. if there is only one umpire he or she must run from behind the plate out into the infield to make base calls. |
