Freestyle competitions usually have three rounds while each round takes about a half an hour.  Each rider gets about a forty-five second to a two minute run.

A freestyle course is a very small area that can either be in an arena or outside and they are filled with jumps that vary in size according the size of the arena.

Most freestyle courses have ramp to dirt gaps, but some courses (like the X-games course) have dirt to dirt gaps for the more talented/hard-core  riders.

Some of the biggest names in freestyle are Mike Metzger, Tommy Clowers, Travis Pastrana, Brian Deegan, Carey Hart, Mike Jones, and Nate Adams.

The extreme sport of freestyle is a new sport that most people are just learning about.  It originated when Jeremy McGrath raced for Honda and pulled off some crowd pleasing stunts that are now known in freestyle as the "superman" and the "whip".  Soon other people started trying different variations of these tricks and even inventing completely different tricks all together.  The most popular and crowd pleasing trick right now is the backflip.

The dirt bikes used for freestyle are mainly 250cc bikes and sometimes 125cc bikes.  All members of the Metal Mulishia (a group of freestyle riders) ride Honda CR250 dirt bikes.

Freestyle can also be very dangerous.  Most pro freestyle riders have an injury list that could just about fill a note book.  Yes, riders can get seriously injured in other types of riding,  but when you mess up in freestyle, you're hitting the ground pretty hard.

There are also different types of freestyle contests.  For example, in the Olympics, competitors high jump over a pole.  After every jump they clear, the pole is raised. Whoever can jump the highest without knocking down the pole, wins.  Freestyle riders took the same sport, and put it on dirt bikes.  The riders  ride off a nearly vertical jump and fly strait up into the airover a pole.  If the rider clears the pole, it's raised.  If the rider knocks it down, they get eliminated.
