Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith. Naismith was a teacher YMCA International Training School in Massachusetts. Basketball was only invented to relieve the boredom of his students during winter physical education. Since the weather kept everyone indoors, he nailed two fruit baskets to the balconies at each end of the gym and they used a soccer ball to score with. Naismith set some basic rules that are still used today. |

The first game of basketball game was played on March 11, 1892 between the students and teachers of YMCA Training School. During this game the students ended up winning with a score of 5 to 1. |
