Basketball is a great sport. It was begun in Springfield, Mass., where a young teacher named Naismith first conceived the sport. It originally started with a pole and an old laundry basket. The ball was made out of leather. There are 5 players on the court at one time and usually 10 or11 on a team that dress. This sport is played as young as 4th grade. It is one of the hardest sports to make the team at a tryout because you can't have 25 people on the team. Let alone the court. The sport is played with a basketball (usually orange in color). You are not allowed to carry the ball and you are not allowed to foul. Fouling may result in a penalty shot. Another fact about the hoop you shoot the ball into, you are able to put two basketballs in the hoop at one time. You can run, shoot, and steal the ball. A basketball is usually a little bigger than an average adult head. There have been many great legends over the years. One of them being Mike Jordan, George Mikan, and Bill Walton. These are just a few of the greats.
