Roses come in eight major varieties.  They are: Old garden roses, Modern roses, Floribundas, Polyanthas, Grandifloras, Climbing roses, Miniature roses (which 150 years ago were known as Fairy Roses), and Tree roses.  They come in a lot of colors which are: yellow, apricot, primrose, copper, salmon, vermilion, orange, red, crimson, scarlet, coral, rose, pink, lilac, purple, white, and mauve.  Roses have symbolized love, beauty, war, and politics.  They are America's National Flower because of their hardiness, beauty, and adaptability.   They are the flower for the month of June.  They date back to 35 million years ago.  Roses are the state flower for Georgia, Iowa, New York, North Dakota, and Washington DC.  George Washington is the first United States rose breeder.  60% of America's roses are grown in California.

An interesting fact is that they can be grown by placing the stem of a rose in the ground and placing a jar on top of it.  The jar will create a type of terrarium which, in turn, will create a suitable living environment for your rose.
