Orchids are a very commonly grown house plant because of their interestingly shaped flowers.  They are grown on every continent, except on Antarctica.  There are 33,000 species known, and they are 20 million years old.  John Lindley is considered the father of orchid cultivation.  They are known as "The Royal Family of Plants".  Orchids are an air-breathing plant, which allows them to grow by only hanging on to other plants.  They like a warm tropical temperature to grow in and like to be misted.  They like to be misted because they like the air to be moist.  They can not grow in deserts.  When orchids are dehydrated (meaning they do not have enough water), their leaves get very leathery-looking and dry.  They come in a variety of colors.  It is very rare to find an orchid that has a scent.  The Dendrobium type is the most easiest to grow.  Another type is Phalaenopsis (also known as the moth orchid).  Orchids have two types of root systems.  One is terrestrial, which means that the roots grow below the ground.  The other is epiphytes which means that the roots grow above ground.
