Magnolias are a tree or a shrub with beautiful flowers on it. Some magnolia trees can grow to 75 feet high! The Magnolia flowers have a sweet lemon-like fragrance. They come in a saucer, cup, lily, or star shape. The star shape has many petals that come out from behind one another giving it the illusion of a star. It has a tropical appeal given to it by it's leaves, which are large, stiff, and bright dark green. They can withstand severe cold, which you would not expect from such a tropical looking flower. They do well in Virginia, because they like the cooler winter temperatures. There are two main varieties of magnolias. One is the native type which blooms in late spring to summer and has white, yellow, or green flowers. The last type is the Asian type. It blooms from early to late spring and has white, pink, reddish-purple, or purple flowers. Magnolias originate from East Asia, Japan, China, the Himalayas, and North America. Mississippi is the Magnolia state.
