from ragtime and blues and characterized by propulsive syncopated rhythms,
polyphonic ensemble playing, varying degrees of improvisation, and often
deliberate distortions of pitch and timbre. |

| There are many instruments used in jazz music. The saxophone is one of the most important instrument in jazz music. Other popular instruments are: the trumpet, the baritone sax, the piano, the guitar, the trombone, the alto sax, drums, and brass. Some instruments that are not used that often are: flutes, clarinet, the harmonica, the tuba, and the organ. |

Rowan University hosts Jazz Festival featuring Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and Philadelphia native Randy Brecker from February 5 to 7, 2003.The Rochester International Jazz Festival will make a spectacular return to Rochester New York June 5-14, 2003 featuring a longer run and more performances. The expanded 2003 festival will cover 10 days and feature 60 acts in more than 15 locations. "Our mission is to deliver a fantastic artist lineup and develop one of the best jazz festivals anywhere," said Festival Producer and Artistic Director John Nugent. |
| Of all the myths about jazz,
the one that may be hardest to dispel is this: jazz music was born in New
Orleans, made its way up the mighty Mississippi River to Chicago, and then
found its way to New York, where it began its conquest of the world. Well,
the true story is more complicated and much more colorful.

Formed from a host of sources-with roots in tribal rituals of Africa and, later, the spirtitals, sorrow songs, and field hollers of the enslaved blacks in the American South-this unique art form evolved over time, incorporating traditions from blues, ragtime, European folk music and hymns, and many other musical idioms. And, through the course of its evolution, it drew energy and personality from a long line of innovative musicians and perfromers to become what some have called Black Classical Music or American Classical Music. |
