The history of soccer is a very interesting one. It included greats likeDiego Mara Dona and Ronaldo. It include some great teams like the New York Cosmos and Manchester United.

A long time ago many ancient cultures played a sport very similar to soccer. Some say that the earliest varieties were played 3000 years ago. The earliest recorded was in 1004 B.C. in Japan when players kicked a ball on a small field. A museum in Germany has text from about 50 B.C. that mentions games similar to soccer being played between Chinese and Japanese teams. The Chinese used a leather ball used with hari and it is for certain that in 611 A.D. a soccer game was played in the Japanese capital. The ancient Romans played a game that resembles modern soccer and in the ancient Roman Olympics they played it with 27 men on one team. When soccer made its way to England the game had got such a bad reputation that the government passed anti-soccer laws. They thought it was so bad that they would imprison anyone who played the game. But in 1691 the laws failed and the sport became legal. The game became very popular in the 1800's and they even started having annual contests, which many people flocked to. Historical records show that Eton college in England had the earliest known rules of the game in 1815. England then exported modern soccer to every continent in the world. Soccer today is the most watched sport and is enjoyed by 8 billion people. The World cup in the US was watched by 33 billion people around the world in 27 days. More people watch soccer than the Olympics and more people watch soccer than football, baseball, and basketball combined.
