You should feed your horse plenty of grass.  It has almost all of the nutrients and vitamins a horse could need.  Different horse require different amounts and types of feeds.  Horses also need foods high in fiber such as hay.

Grass obviously grows in fields, so try to let your horse out during the day to graze.  The place to feed them hay is in a stall in a feed bag or bucket.  That is also the same for feed.

When feeding a horse by hand, make sure to hold your hand flat underneath their mouth, and let the horse grab the food.  Don't shove or force the food into their mouth.  Let the horse sniff first if they are unsure. This is true when they have never seen the food.

Try not to get a horse into bad feeding habits.  Don't let them eat with a bit in their mouth.  It's not good for their health.  An okay habit would be to let them eat with a halter on.  It doesn't get in the way of their chewing.
