In 1961 Roger Maris amazed fans when he beat the unbeatable record set by Babe Ruth in 1927.

Roger hit 61 in 1961.  He did it with the fans aganst him for most of the season.  The fans wanted Mickey Mantle to win the homerun race if anyone.  Maris would get hundreds of death threats from People who lived in New York.  

Maris won the MVP that year and ended up a fan favorite.  Him and Mantle were best friends and lived together in New York during the season.

Roger's wife lived in Kansas City and she would wacth the games on closed circut television.

When Babe Ruth set the record in 1927 the season only had 154 games.  When Roger hit his 61st on the 162nd game of the year.  Till 1991 there were two records.  The first was Babe's record in 154 games.  Roger's record was the 162 games record.  Then in 1991 the commisioner of major league baseball declared from that now on there would be only a 162 game record.
