Mark Macgwire started his career in the 1980's with the Oakland Athletics.  In 1998 when he broke the homerun record he played for the St. Louis Cardinals.  He broke Roger Maris's record when he hit 61 in 1961 by 9 homeruns.  He hit 70 homeruns.

In 1998 he hit 70 homeruns.  When he did this he had some compotision.  His compotision was Sammy Sosa.  He played for the Chicago Cubs.  Sammy hit 66 homeruns that year.  When Mark Macgwire hit is 62 to beat the record the St. Louis Cardinals were playing the Chicago Cubs.  Sammy was there to congratulate him.     

Even though his record only lasted 3 years when Barry Bonds Broke it in 2001 with 73.

Even though his record was broken in a short time he still is a future Hall of Famer and he will be remembered for quite some time to come. 

1998 was the best year of his career.  He batted .280 with 70 homeruns and a slugging percentage of over .600.
