George Herman Ruth was born on February sixth, 1895.  His mother Kate Ruth gave birth to her first child on the Baltimore, Maryland water front.

He was given the name "babe" because it seems that his baby fat went away.  The name stuck with him his entire life.  In the beginning of his career he played for the Boston Red Sox.  He was one of the best pitchers in the league.  His career ERA {Earned Runs Allowed}.  In the 6 years he played for Boston he hit only 39 homes in 391 at bats.

In 1920 he was traded to the New York Yankees where he played for most of his career.  The Yankees tried him out in right-field because they needed him to bat in the lineup.  After a month his perminant spot became the three spot in the order.  That is also how he got his number 3. He played for New York for 15 years and hit 659 homeruns for the team.

His greatest year was 1927 when he hit 60 homeruns beating his own record that he set in 1921 when he hit 59 homeruns.  His batting average {hits/at bats} was .356 which was incredible because if you look at homerun hitters today who hit 60 homeruns and bat .250.  His career was amazing as he dazzled fans who would come from hundreds of miles away to see the Babe play the game.  While he played he hit 714 homeruns which is second of all time.  He is still remembered today and will be remembered forever.
