Slap bass is an advanced technique of playing the bass. You have to slap your thumb off the string while plucking your index finger off another one. Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers uses this method a lot. Slap bass is difficult to play. You should play normal for a couple of years before you try slap bass.
This is the most common way of playing bass. You hit the string with you index and middle finger. This can be used with any style of music. Every bass player should be able to play this way. This is the way you should play as a beginner.
	Picking is when you have a plastic pick and you hit the pick off of the string. In the 80's practically no one use to try picking. But since the 90's a lot more bands are starting to play with picks. Green Day, Blink 182, and Good Charlotte are some of the bands who use this method of playing. When you pick as a bassist you usually started playing with an electric guitar so its easy for you to pick.
