Dan
Radcliff
(Harry Potter)
Sometimes lightning can strike unexpected in a young actors life, like when the makers of the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone stumbled upon Dan Radclif when they were looking for the perfect looking Harry Potter. He still had to audition five times, but still, they were on the road to the perfect Harry.
Dan had acted in many low budget films such as a BBC production of David Copperfeild, but this was his first major motion picture.
An Interview with the Star
How did you hear about the movie?
I just got done with David Copperfield, and I went to my friend's house and he said me, "Oh Dan, you know they're holding auditions for the Harry Potter film. You should go out for it." And I said, "No! There's going to be millions of boy' and girls. I'd never get that."
Were you nervous at your auditions?
I was very nervous. I came out of the first one thinking I had messed up really badly. And then I came out of the second one thinking, 'Well, that was okay."
Where were you when you found out you got the part?
I was in the bath. It was David (Heyman, the film's producer) who called, and he told my dad. He rushed upstairs and told me, and I started to cry- with joy, of course!
How did you prepare for the movie?
Because J.K. Rowling and (screenwriter) Steve Kloves portrayed Harry so well and bring out his character, it's quite easy to get into his mind.
Any embarrassing moments from the set you can share?
There's one moment where we ran down the corridor, and we had these books on leather straps holding them. And we had to run, sit at our desks and unwrap them. Well, Rupert (Grint, who plays Ron) unwrapped his really fast, and it actually flew out and hit him in the eye.
What's your favorite scene or set?
Probably in the final chamber. It's really huge, and intense. And it's very frightening.
Any other really cool ones?
The chess scene, where there are giant chess pieces. And Devil's Snare- the set was so cool, and it had great special effects.
Anything funny happen during the filming?
There's this one scene where Rupert tips a whole box of jelly beans into his mouth and he gets loads of disgusting ones!
Did you have a stunt double?
I did most of the stunts myself, I'm proud to say. I had to fall into concrete, but I was padded. I also hung 22 feet high in the air on a broomstick with one hand when I was doing to the Quidditch game.
If you could cast a spell on someone, what would it be?
If I liked them, it would be a spell where I'd give them a special power, like invisibility. If I didn't like them, I'd probably make them really embarassed.
What kind of magical powers would you like to have?
Invisibility, so I could sneak into top-secret meetings and stuff.
How did you get into acting?
I was always interested in acting. I know it wasn't quite likely that I'd become an actor because not many people get to be actors, if you think about how many people want to be. I've been very lucky.
What was your first audition?
David Copperfield. After four months and six auditions I got the part, which was really cool.
Do you find it easy to memorize lines?
After I read the script about three times, it sinks into my head. With Harry Potter, it took about six times, because it was a lot bigger.
You're a newcomer at the whole cleb thing. Are you nervous about the movie premiere?
It makes me sorta nervous. There will probably be some huge spot (British for pimple) in my nose or something, or I'll trip and fall on my face. I'm not clumsy, I'm just accident prone.
Do you have any upcoming projects?
Just Harry Potter 2. We start filming at the end of this year.
Do you want to make all the Harry Potter movies?
I hope to, but I probably won't. After a while I'll change so much physically that I won't look right.
Do you think people will eventually call you Harry instead of Dan?
It would be cool if they did! I like that name.

Emma Watson
(Hermione Granger)
The Leading Lady of this prodcution was born in April of 1990, and had never acted in a film before this. She had taken the female lead in many plays, and had shown her poetic side by winning many contests. She remembers having to audition many times before she even thought she had the chance of getting the part.
An Interview with the Star
We'd love to hear about your audition.
My drama teacher called my name out in assembly, so I walked up to him, and he asked me, "I wanted to know if you'd like to audition for a part in the Harry Potter movie?" I did my first audition for a laugh. But as I got up in the ranks, they got more serious. it wasn't until I did the last one that I realized I had a chance of getting it. And then I got the part, which was wonderful.
When you were auditioning, did you know how to pronounce Hermione's name?
(Laughs) Yes!
Did you always want to be an actor?
Yeah, for ages. Probably since I was five or six.
\What kind of acting have you done?
I've been in loads of school plays. I did The Swallow and the Prince, where I played the Swallow. I did Alice in Wonderland, where I was the Angry Cook. My favorite was the musical Morgan Le Fay because there were lots of good songs in it. I love to sing.
So, let's talk about the movie. How did you feel about seeing yourself on the big screen?
I really am self-critical. I'll say, "Look! I look so stupid. I look so awful!"
What was your favorite scene?
The Troll scene is the best; they had loads of stunts to do.
Was there anything you wanted to take home from the set?
Loads of stuff! I'd love to take home one of the chess pieces. They're amazing. They're massive and I love the colors in them. They're spooky as well. Most of the pawns had weird eyes. It's scary!
What magical powers do you wish you could have?
I'd like to fly.
Did you get to do any flying in the movie?
No, it was unfair! Hermione didn't get a broomstick.
If you could cast a spell, what would it be?
I think I'd help people in need.
Do you think you have a lot in common with Hermione?
We're the same 'cause she loves cats and so do I. Otherwise, we're opposites. I love school and I try hard, but I'm not as clever as Hermione.
What are your favorite subjects?
Well, non-academically, I love sports. I play rounders- which is a lot like baseball-, hockey, tennis, athletics, everything!
Are there any subjects that you hate?
I hate geography and math. I hate them, hate them, hate them!
How would you like to see the Harry Potter series end?
I would like Voldemort to be properly killed- dead- so that Harry won't have any more problems. For Ron's dad to get really, really, super-duper rich. For Malfoy's parents to go broke. And I'd like Hermione to get a really good job.
Do you think Hermione will marry Ron in the end?
No way! Ewww! I think it's weird because I'm thinking of myself in the part.
How would you describe yourself in three words?
Sporty, determined, and try- my- best- at- everything.

Rupert Grint
(Ron Weasly)
If you had to describe 13 year old Rupert Grint in three words it would be personality, personality, personality. That's why he won over the director for the part of Ron in only his audition tape! Not to mention that he had the same red hair and freckles.
An Interview with the Star
When did you discover that you wanted to be an actor?
I always wanted to go into acting. I went to an after-school drama class for two years, and I did a lot of school plays.
Tell us about your audition for HP.
I was really nervous. Even when I left the audition I was nervous. I went to meet the producer and the director and read another bit of the script, and then I went to do the screen test at the studios.
How did you find out you got the part?
I was with Emma, and they took us into Chris Columbus's office and told us that we were going to be in the film.
It must've been amazing!
I was so excited I nearly fainted.
How are you and Ron similar?
We both have orange hair. We also have big families- I have three sisters and one brother. Since my brothers are bigger than me, I get hand-me-downs. And my brother is a "prefect". Ron is a wimp and I get scared easily too.
Really!? What scars you?
The dark... and spiders! I just run from them. I don't have enough courage to squash them.
How are you two different?
I'm shorter. I don't have as many freckles as Ron and I cant' do magic.
What's your favorite scene in the movie?
I love the train scene. It's really sweet. Devil's Snare is also incredible. It's amazing... brilliant.
Did you get to do cool stunts, or did you have a double?
I did one in the Devil's Snare scene. They attached me to a harness and a saftey rope, pulled me about 50 feet up in the air and then dropped me down. I landed on the Devil's Snare. I was afraid of heights at the time, but after I did that I wasn't afraid anymore.
Before The Sorcerer's Stone, you were in a bunch of school plays, tell us about them.
The most recent one was Rumpelstiltskin. I played Rumpel- that was fun. I like playing the bad guy.
How about future projsects? Are you working on a film right now?
I just finished, actually, it's called Thunderpants. I play the best friend. He's a geeky kind of character and he helps out the other boy. I has to have my hair permed for the part and wear fake teeth for the role. I looked like a real dork.
Is your hair still permed?
I just got it straightened to go back to school.
What is your favorite magic trick in the movie?
The Invisibility cloak. That was really cool.
What magic power would you like to have?
I'd like to levitate.
Was there anything on the set that you'd want to take home with you?
My rat. I couldn't take him home, though. I also liked the sweets- jelly beans and chocolate frogs.
Do you think Ron will end up marrying Hermione in the future?
I don't know. I think they'll get together.
So how would you like to see the whole Harry Potter series end?
I want Ron to stand up to Malfoy and punish him.

James Phelps
(Fred Weasley)
James, 15, is the second half of the Weasley prankster team, and describes himself as friendly, active, and sporty (sound familiar to any one??)
An Interview with the Actor
What was your favorite scene?
At King's Cross. We got to ride on a steam engine.
Did the older cast members give you any good career advice?
Julie Walters (Mrs. Weasley) said, :Take it like a laugh and be yourself," which was great advice.
Did you get along with the other kids on the set?
Yeah, I got to be good friends with them. We still speak to each other now.
Do you play pranks on people?
At school, we like to mess around with peoples' heads.
What kind of magic would you love to have?
I'd like to be able to change things into something else. I think it would be funny. If you wanted some chocolate or you wanted some fruit, you could just change it right there and then
How would you describe your character?
He's friendly and he likes to have a good laugh.
Is there anything that you would like anyone to know?
I don't really have red hair, I have brown hair.

Oliver Phelps
(George Weasley)
Oliver Phelps, fifteen describes himself as talkative, active, and friendly-qualities not unlike his character George Weasley. And he's got a twin brother!
An Interview with the Actor
Did you have fun working with your brother?
It was quite good to work with someone I already know. We get along well.
Is there any sibling rivalry between the two of you?
When we play golf, but nothing serious.

We sometimes swap names. I'll pretend to be James and he'll pretend to be me,

I practiced my voice so people could understand me.
What magical powers would you love to have?
To fly. I would love being up in the air and looking at what's going on down below.
How would you describe your character?
He's very mischevious. He got me to do things that I've never done before, like being disrespectful to my elders. I try to be as respectful as I can.
Is there anything that you would like to tell people?
That I've got a Wed Site- www.oliverphelps.com

Sean Biggerstaff
(Oliver Wood)
Eighteen year old Sean has got to be the hunk of the movie. he says the one thing that is different between him and his character is that he's not so obsessed with winning.
An Interview with the Actor
How did you get into acting?
I started in local drama groups when I was seven. I auditioned for Macbeth when was ten and worked for the Royal Shakespear Company.
Tell us about your character.
He's very sporty, slightly eccentric and very passionate about Quiditch. Wanting to with the House Cup is like the Holy Grail to him.
Are you anything like him?
I can relate to his desire to win, but I'm not as competitive. Oliver's got more of a "winning is everything" attitude. And he's a bit more of an oddball than I am.
Did you get along with the other kids on the set?
They were great. There was a surprisingly low brat-factor. Daniel (Radciff) is fantastic and very smart. He's got his head screwed on.
What magical power would you love to have?
I've always wanted to be able to fly. I used to watch Superman movies and I thought that would be like the coolest thing.
Is there anything that you would like everyone to know?
I'm devilishly good-looking, and single!

Tom Felton
(Malfoy)
Thirteen year old Tom Felton is no stranger to the spotlight, in fact he played Jodie Foster's son in the film Anna and the King. But, it was his role in Harry Potter in the Sorcerer's Stone that let him see his name in lights.
An Interview with the Actor
how did you prepare for this role?
I practiced facial expressions, and I snarled like a wolf.
What was it like, working with such great actors?
Richard harris (Dumbledor) and Maggie Smith (McGonagall) are great. I was nervous around Robbie Coltran (Hagrid) at first; I didn't want to say anything. But then we became friends.
Was there anything on the set that you wanted to take home?
I would've taken my wand. It's really cool. It was a bit of a wavy sort of shape.
Are you different from Malfoy?
He's very mean. To be honest, I am not that mean. I think he's jealous, and he wants to be the coolest guy in school.
Do you prefer to play a good character or a bad one?
Bad, it's more fun because it's different.
What kind of spell would you love to cast on someone?
I'd make their legs stick together so wherever the person went, they would fall down.
What magical power would you love to have?
Invisibility. So I could sneak around and go places I shouldn't.

Harry Melling
(Dudley)
Twelve year old Harry Melling loved to play the brat, but he didn't think he'd play such a big part in the film.
An Interview with the Actor
How did you prepare for the role?
I went over my lines with my mum, and she gave me advice.
What kind of advice?
How to say things. When to hold a word longer or when to go up in a tone of voice.
Are you different from Dudley?
I'm not like him; I don't bully people.
If you could cast as spell on someone, what would it be?
I'd make them into an animal-like a hamster- and use them as a pet.
Did you find it hard torturing Harry?
No, I found it quite fun, actually.
What's your favorite scene?
When I get me Smeltings uniform and I walk around the house.
If you could change one thing about Dudley, what would it be?
I would make him a wizard.
Tell us: How did they attach the pigs tail to your behind?
I can't tell you. It's a bit of the magic.
What do you hope happens to Dudley in the future?
That he goes to Hogwarts and maybe acts a bit nicer to Harry.
Any words of wisdom for Dudley?
Stop bullying Harry!
