The General Appearance

The Chow is an Arctic type of dog with a powerful, sturdy square built. Their body is very compact with short legs and the tail set high on the back. The Chow's head is very large and broad with a flat scull. These main features make the Chow Chow a very alert and agile dog. 

The Head

The skull is proudly carried and is very large compared to the dog but not too much to make the Chow look top heavy. The nose is large and broad and usually black in color. The blue Chow can have a blue nose. Most of the Chow's mouth is black, but the tongue can be blue, black pink, or with pink spots. The Chow's teeth are the most dangerous part of their body. The Chow Chow has hooked fang teeth which are very deadly if you are bitten with them. Their eyes are dark brown, deep set and very far apart from each other. The ears are triangular in shape but rounded at the top. These features give the Chow an Oriental appearance.   

Coat

The Chow's coat can be two different types, either rough or smooth, both of the coats are double coated. The rough coat is very dense and rough in texture. The smooth coated Chow is not much different. They both have their own shapes and sizes but overall everything is the same.
