The Chow is very intelligent but not easy to train. They do not have the desire to please their master like other dogs. They also will not tolerate physical punishment and will not be forced into anything. Hitting or beating your Chow will cause viciousness or broken spirit. The Chow will only do what it feels like doing during that time. Your Chow will expect to be treated with respect and will return the respect to you only if you deserve it. Many people misunderstand the Chow's temperament and think they are very vicious dogs. They are naturally suspicious of others and very territorial. They are very protective of their home, family, and anything else that they love. Another way people misunderstand them is that you cannot read their expressions very easily and their appearance make them look angry. The Chow has a lot of affection for their family but does not go looking for it from strangers like some other dogs. While training your dog you must be very strong willed, because the Chow is a very strong willed dog and they will over rule you if you let them. The puppies are naturally more behaved than most other puppies. They will very rarely be destructive or disobedient. Because the Chow is so well behaved many owners do not train them the way they should. When your Chow enters those teenage years they will refuse your authority, but you have to make sure you keep your ground and make them obey you. The Chow enjoys its time alone while you are not home but when you are home they will enjoy your company. The Chow is not meant to be an outside dog. If you have the Chow as an outside dog they will be very unsocial. The Chow does not like other pets very much, such as cats or dogs of the same sex. | ![]() |
