       Rules of Soccer

There are many rules in soccer. One of the most important rules in soccer is the goalie is the only one allowed to use his hands. You can you everything except your arms from your right below your shoulders and down. You can use your chest, head, legs, shoulders, anything but your arms. The only time a player uses his hands is on a throw-in. When you use your hands the other team gets a direct kick. If you do it inside the penalty box the other team gets a penalty kick. The game is composed of two halves. Each half containing 45 minutes in professional soccer and less under professional. Off sides is a rule where if you are on the other past you half of the field and back behind the last player besides the goalie and you are introduced into the play, then the referee calls a direct kick for the other team from where you received the ball. There are no penalty minutes but if you do something bad you will get the other team a free kick and you might get a card. If you kick the ball out in your half behind the goal the other team gets a corner kick. If the other team does you get a goal kick.
The referee in this picture has his hand up on a kick. Which means it is indirect, that means that you kick the ball after someone touches the ball forward.
This is a picture of the referee pointing to the corner for a corner kick.
The referee has a red card up in this picture. Usually you get this card if you break a really bad rule. The red card means ejection from the game.
The card that is up in this picture is a picture of a yellow card. This is you something bad but not bad enough for a red card. A yellow card means is like a warning before you get a red card. Two yellow cards equal a red card.
The referee is signaling a time out in this picture. A timeout where the game takes a break and the clock does not move.
Another rule is how many players you can have on the field. You can have a maximum of 11 players including the goalie on the field at one time. You can sub someone else in for someone on the field only if it is your throw or a goal kick. They can only be subbed in if they are at the 50 yd line. What you wear is also a rule. You can not have cleats with metal spikes, no sharp edged shin guards, no casts. In between halves there is a ten minute break called half time.
