           History of Soccer

No one really knows who created soccer, but many of the early civilizations had a kicking game. The modern game of soccer was created in 19th century in England. This was when a variety of football games developed. The first laws of soccer were supposedly drafted in 1862 by J.C. Thring of the Uppingham School. At the meeting of London Football Association in 1863 the sport split into two. One went into the American football and the other soccer. At first soccer was mostly played in private schools and universities. Soon the everyone picked up the sport. The first tournament was organized in 1871 which started the rapid spread of soccer in England.

The 1872 game between an English team and a Scottish team began the mark of international games. In 1888 a regular league was started in England. Soccer's global spread started in the late 1800's when sailors and traders carried the sport to the places they went. Almost everywhere they went the sport began to be played. One nation that resisted soccer for long was the United States. Soccer was played mostly among immigrants but it was not until the 1970's that a national professional league gained its popularity. Since then there has been a growing popularity for soccer in the United States, that has attracted sponsorship for the sport. The USSF granted the right to organize the 1994 World Cup. The event proved to be a great success.
