The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog's functions are guarding, herding, drafting and active companions. They live to be about eight to ten years old. Their color is solid black with white and rich rust. They have regular markings on their face, chest and paws. 

They have a dense coat. And sometimes their thick under coat will show through their at their chest and belly. They need a minimal grooming. They also need to be brushed weekly. They'll need their toe nails clipped and a bath when needed. They have a high activity level. Along with a high intelligence. The males height is twenty-five to twenty-nine inches. A female height ranges from twenty-four to twenty-seven inches. Both male and females weight ranges from ninety to one hundred pounds. Their trainability is high if you start early. And they are excellent watchdogs.   

They have an affectionate character. For their home environment they're a good dog for active families. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog needs lots of space. So they are best for homes with large fenced in yards. They are good with children but adult supervision is still recommended. They may be inappropriate with toddlers. They're good with other animals. They're attitude with strangers is wary until they are introduced and then they are friendly.
