The British soldier in 1740-1800 was the best trained and disciplined soldier in the world.  He was drilled 2 times a day and shot 1 live shot a month.  The men were shooting a self contained cartridge which means that the black powder is in the paper with the ball (see the cartridge pic). The regiments were number according to there skill in both combat and drill.  The smaller your number the better your are.  It wasn't uncommon for the whole army to get new numbers because a regiment was wiped out.  For example the 60th was the 62nd ,but the 55th and the 52nd were wiped out so the 62nd became the 60th.  The life for the soldier was tough.  The soldier slept in tent with 6 men.  The tents were 6' wide and 8' long.  Only about 20% of war time was spent fighting 80% was spent marching and building forts.  Because of this more than half of the people that died, died from disease than combat.
