British Musick

These are some British music uniforms in 1759. The first from the left is the 60th regiment 4th platoon uniform. The middle one is the 60th 1st platoon uniform (note it does not have all its lace on it.)  The one on the far Right is the Maryland forces uniform he wears the opposing colors of the men of foote so were there is black the men have red.

The music was the most important job.  The music was the walkie talkie of the 18th century.  The men were not suppose to shoot the music ,but the rangers were always shooting them.  The drummers had a beat for all the calls and the maneuvers they also beat to keep the men synchronized.  The fifers played tunes for the charge, retreat, taps and other such things.  Most musicians were 14 and under.  They didn't write the music down in the army in that day and age.  The first music wasn't  written down and passed out to the musicians until 1810.  You can find some music written in diaries.  When a musician was recruited he only had 6 months to learn to play his instrument perfectly.  The musicians uniforms Had lace on them. The red was scarlet red like the officers.
