Why get a Cocker Spaniel?

Cockers make great pets and companion animals.  They love homes, family, and children. They easily adapt to most environments because of their small size, and they are loyal and even-tempered. The Cocker Spaniel is an perfect companion for a hunter, because of its loyalty and intelligence.  If you are looking into showing a dog, the Cocker is a beautiful one to get. Whether you decide to train a puppy yourself, or buy a trained dog to show, it's a wonderful feeling when you succeed.

Adult or Puppy?

Now you've decided to get a Cocker Spaniel. There are some points to consider first, though. Would a puppy or an adult dog be better for your lifestyle? While it's a great experience to raise a Cocker from puppy to adult and you can "mold" the puppy to fit the type of dog you desire, people who have done it say it's definitely not easy. The puppy is going to need constant attention, and you're going to have a lot of work to do. The puppy needs to be housebroken, and you can't forget the fact that all puppies love to chew. If you are very busy and don't feel like you could do a good job raising a young Cocker Spaniel, maybe you should look into an older dog. Adults are good to get because they've already been trained by breeders, meaning you don't have to housebreak them or teach them commands. Adult dogs probably are more used to being left alone, so you wouldn't have to worry when you go out. Older Cockers will also find it easy to adapt to you and their new home, but it will be hard to break the adult dog from any habits it might have acquired living with its previous owner. If you are looking into showing a dog, Cocker  puppies can be tricky. You will get great satisfaction in seeing the puppy you trained succeed in the ring. However, it's not easy to train dogs, and if your training does not pull through, you're going to be disappointed. Purchasing an older dog for show is a good idea, because it has, again, already been trained. You will pay more for an adult to show, though.
