If horses are not ridden in a long time or ridden too much they become lame. To become lame means to not be able to function and to become sore. Once a horse is declared lame they usually are turned out into a pasture for a while.
Some horses have difficulty breathing and require a drug called Lacek. Lacek helps the horses breathe and overall increases their performance rate.
This is what a usual stall looks like. It has a gate in front so the horse can stick its head over, but not escape. They have a feed bucket hanging on the wall near it too. Another thing one should know if caring for a racehorse is if they have any allergies. Some horses, and I have seen them, are allergic to the hay or straw that you usually line their stalls with. If this should be the case then you must supplement the straw with woodchips and a heat lamp. The heat lamp takes the place of the warmth that the straw would have provided. Woodchips are usually the best alternative.
On a race night a horse might not be fed as much as usual because of the fact that they want their stomachs to be empty at the start of a race. If a horse is overfed before a race sometimes they will be scratched. The judges or horses owners may scratch the horse if it is unwell or injured.
