Let us assume that you know more or less the type of dog you feel you can best live with. Even though you may have no intention in ever showing your dog, dog shows are good places to visit while you are finally making up your mind. Talk to the people showing, find out what their views are on their breed.

The next step is to look for the right breeder who would expect a premium price for puppies of show standard. Many dogs are still sold through so-called "puppy farms" and pet shops. Neither is a suitable place to find a puppy. Take your time and be prepared to wait to get the dog you really want.

There is some argument about the right age to buy a puppy, although the usual age to buy a puppy is when they are about eight weeks old.
