Grooming

If you are about to become a new Lab owner you will find out that Lab's only need the minimal coat care.  It is pretty much wash and wear.  If your Lab is really dirty you can give it a bath but usually a brushing will restore your Lab's beautiful coat.

Shedding and Brushing

Males and females usually shed twice a year.  The first time is during the Spring when they lose the most hair and the second time is during the Autumn, when they don't lose as much hair.  Coat quality is largely a part of genetics but the coat is also affected by climate, living conditions and diet.  Brushing your dog once or twice a week will help to keep it healthy and shiny.

Trimming the Coat and Nails

Lab's don't need to get their coat (hair) cut.  They do need to get their nails cut though if the dog's nails click on the floor and you can hear them.  But most of the time the dog will wear it own nails down while playing outside.

Cleaning the Teeth and Ears

A large dog biscuit and dry kibble for your dog once a day is enough to help keep its teeth clean.  You can also buy Nylafloss and Gumabones that help to keep tartar and plaque down.

If your dog has an ear infection it will usually give off a bad odor.  You should check their ears every once in a while.  If you think your dog has an ear infection you can take it to the vet and get medication.

When and What to Feed your Lab

Some people free feed their dogs, leaving food in a bowl at all times, but it is better to have a planned schedule.  For example 9:00 in the morning and 5:00 in the afternoon.  Labradors are good eaters so its easy to put a well balanced diet in one bowl.  You want to avoid wet foods because it would be like giving your child hot dogs and candy.
