The Lab's History

Many historians think that the Labrador originally came from Newfoundland not Labrador.  The Labradors were known by many different names like St. John's Water Dog, the Little Newfoundlander, and the Black Water Dog before officially being called the Labrador Retriever.

The Labrador in the U.S.

The Labrador was imported into the U.S. before the beginning of World War 1.   Though the AKC (American Kennel Club) grouped them together with other retrievers, those who were active in sport shooting considered Labrador Retrievers the best.  Many serious breeders from Long Island imported the dogs and expert kennel men from Europe.

The Lab Today

Lab's are used for many different jobs in today's society.  Just a few examples are police dogs, hunting, dog shows, and obedience competition.
