Training Your Dog

House-Training:
Following these simple steps will lead your dog to have regular bathroom times and eliminate any messes around the house. Long-Term: The area should be about the size of a small bathroom, but yet large enough for a bed on one side and a place to eliminate waste at the other. Secure your dog there if you have to be away for longer then the dog can hold its bladder. You'll only need this area until your dog can train to hold it for several hours. Short-Term: The most reasonable area for short term is a crate for only a few hours. Most dogs won't go in their sleeping area because of their natural feeling for cleanliness. Don't put your dog in the crate when it needs to eliminate, this will ruin the effect of the training. |
| Be sure to supervise your dog in the house to make sure nothing happens. You can do this by tying a leash around something stabilized in the house. It might seem a little strict but this will teach the dog to behave so eventually they will be able to roam the house as they please. Make sure to give the dog something to play with, such as a nice chew toy on the products page. Don't scold and scream if the dog does something wrong, rather praise for good behavior. | ![]() |

Come when called:
This is easier to teach a young pup then an older dog because young ones have a natural tendency to follow. Hide and seek is a good way to teach the pup. Call the puppy at least five times a day, so it can get used to it. Don't call the dog when you're about to do something bad, like give it a bath, because then it won't come when you want it to. |
| Some owners have different rules for their dogs. Dogs may be allowed on the couch, others may not. No matter what you allow, all dogs must know some basic manners. They must learn to "sit" and greet people nicely. "Down" will probably be common in your vocabulary if you have an active dog. Come is another good call, as stated above. All of these will help you have a well-mannered and well-behaved dog that you can be proud of. | ![]() |

No matter what, you always need to be patient and consistent with your dog. Decide what rules and limits you will set on your dog and then carry out the training in the manner. Changing your goals is unfair to the dog, and it will easily become confused. My best piece of advice to you is, if you have a new puppy, join a training class right away. This is good for the dog because it gets along with the others and learns many manners that it will use all of its life. Take advantage of your dogs young age and start today. |
