In 1901, the National and American Leagues came together to create the world of major league baseball. The World Series first began in 1903, when the Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates played one another for the championship. The Boston Red Sox were the winners.

In 1876, the National League was organized by William Hulbert and Albert Spalding. By 1901, the National League had eight teams: New York, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis.

Byron Brancroft Johnson was president of the Western League, which was a minor league team. He changed its name to the American League, and declared it a major league association in 1901. The eight original American League teams were Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Washington, Baltimore, Boston, and Philadelphia.
