Martie was born on October 12, 1969. She is sister of fellow Dixie Chick Emily. She began playing the violin at age 5. In 1987, she won second place at the Old Times Fiddler Convention. In 1989, she and Emily began playing for tips at street corners in Dallas. That same year, she won third place at the National Fiddler Competition.
	Martie's hobbies and interests include skiing, horseback riding, and golfing. She also likes to write songs, visit her best friend Lori in Hawaii, and hang out with her ex-husband and her step son.
Martie has short blonde hair. She has greenish blue eyes and is 5'7". She is also left handed. She has two sisters, Julia who is older and Emily who is younger.

	Martie is a championship-level fiddle player who started at the age of five years old with just violin lessons. She began "fiddling" when she was 12. At the Walnut Valley Fiddle Championship in 1989 she got 3rd place. She also plays the mandolin and her and her sister Emily would practice everyday with their mother's egg timer, watching only a little television.
In school, Martie was in orchestra. Martie and Emily toured the country together in a teens bluegrass group for six years before helping to found Dixie Chicks. They both were playing acoustic instruments before they hit their teens. Martie tries to work out regularly on the road.
