After the success of the original series and all the films, Gene Roddenberry decided to create another series with a new cast and set it even farther into the future.  The creation that followed was Star Trek: The Next Generation.

This galaxy class ship, under the command of Jean-Luc Picard, was launched in 2363.  It served as the Federation's flagship for 8 years until it was destroyed after crash landing on the planet Viridian III.  This was the fifth ship to bear the name Enterprise.
