Great Danes are the giant of all dogs.  They are lively, gentle, strong, noble, and calm.  Great Danes were bred to hunt large game.  These gentle giants can live to be 6-10 years old.
Males usually weigh around 150 lbs. and females usually weigh 100-120 lbs.  These dogs are around 28-30+ inches tall.  They make great watchdogs and can stay and sleep outside provided they have adequate living conditions.

The Great Dane does shed.  Minimal grooming is necessary.  You can use a bristle brush followed by a soft cloth to keep their coat shiny.
The colors you can expect when picking you dog are black, blue, fawn, brindle, and harlequin (black and white).  Their coat is short and smooth.  The ears may be cropped or left alone.

Great Danes need daily exercise.  Danes love to romp in your backyard.  If you don't want your dogs to run away, your fence must be at least 6 feet tall.
Some hereditary diseases of Great Danes are hyp displasia (poor development of the hip joints), heart disease, and von Willebrand's disease (a bleeding disorder).  Another possible health concern is bloat.  Bloat is caused when the Dane eats on the floor.  The hunched over position creates air in the stomach, which causes the stomach to flip, constricting blood vessels. If this is not treated by immediate surgery the Dane could die.  Some of these diseases can be detected by regular veterinary check-ups and testing.
