
The Pittsburgh Panthers ended their 2001-2002 season with a record of 29 wins and 6 losses. In this season they had many accomplishments. They made the Ncaa tournament which they played Central Connecticut State in the first round. They beat them 71 - 54. In the next round they played the California Golden Bears. They beat them 63 - 50 and they advanced to the Sweet Sixteen to play the Kent State Golden Flashes which they lost 78 - 73 in overtime.

Previous to the Ncaa tournament they played in the Big East Tournament. The first round they got a bye because they ranked first in the west division. In the second round they played Boston College and they trampled them 76 - 62. In the semi finals they played Miami. It was a close game, but Pitt pulled away and won 76 - 71. In the Big East championship they played UConn who ranked first in the east division. At the end of the second half it was tied so they went into one overtime and they still couldn't end the game. In the second overtime UConn finally put Pitt away 74 - 65.

Ben Howland is the head coach of the Panthers, and he won the Associated Press Coach of the year award this year. In addition to this award he got offered a contract extension through the 2008 - 2009 season. |
