Event Description  Any Requirements  Picture of Sport
Steeplechase Steeplechasing is very popular in the UK, though many other countries try to make an even that is its equivilent. The United State's holds its Maryland Hunt Cup, but its jumps usually are post-rail fences. Steeplechasing would be the equestrian version  of cross- country. The object of the game is to run the course as fast as possible, jump the difficult fences, and beat all of your opponents.  The book that I used to get information on steeplechasing did not state any type of restrictions or requirements in the sport. The only thing that I would say that you should do, is to ride a horse that is very fast, good at jumping, and has long and sturdy legs.
Show Jumping In show jumping, you are in a stadium that is set up with many jumps. Your goal is to get the best time running through the obstacle course without any or little penalties.  Once, again, the book that I used to get the information from, did not state any specific requirements.
Dressage Dressage is one of the hardest equestrian event to train for. It is based on  doing intricate "fancy footwork" and looking exquisite while doing it. This competition is complicated because in every tournament you're in, the judges will give you a pamphlet of the course, showing you where you end one thing, and where you're supposed to start another. For example, suppose you had to trot your horse for 6 feet or so, then when you get up to the mark where you stop, you immediately go into another thing, say cantering for 5 strides. Besides having to do different gaits, you usually are challenged into doing stunts like making your horse do pirouettes. There are no Specific requirements in the breed of horse that you enter into a dressage competition. You may want to enter a good looking horse though, since judges look at how you and your horse look together, and how well you cooperate with the animal.
Flat Racing Flat racing is when you ride your horse around a track, and try to beat all of the other horses competing. If you get the best time, you may break a record! The Triple Crown is a tournament set aside specifically for flat racing.  Usually, in flat races, Thoroughbreds are the kind of horse that races, but, I am sure that in less competitive races, other breeds race as well.
