The History of basketball is a very interesting story.  It all started in 1981, when a man named James Naismith was looking for a new game that his students could play.  The game had to be indoors and a team game without the physical contact.  First, he nailed two peach baskets on the balcony which happened to be 10 feet high.  This is when the game of basketball started to take shape.  The object of the game was to get the ball into the basket.  The game was first played with a soccer ball.  But as time went on, the equipment and rules of the game became more developed.  A backboard was added, the hoops evolved into a metal rim with netting, and the soccer ball was replaced with a slightly bigger leather ball.  The NBA was founded in 1946.  There were 11 teams divided into 2 divisions, and the were primarily situated in the big cities.  But the league was doomed from the start, and by the second season, it was down to only 8 teams.  In 1949, the ABA changed its name to the NBA, or National Basketball Association.  Suddenly, the NBA found itself with some very high-profile players and teams such as the Boston Celtics.  The league became more and more popular as it witnessed great players, from Larry Bird to Julius Page and Michael Jordan, and reigns of teams such as the Chicago Bulls.  The Bulls, as you all know, had the dynamic duo; Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.  The future of basketball will continue to grow and it will continue to bring more great players and teams, and the sport will continue to be a fan favorite.
