Here are some interesting facts about the Lhasa Apso........................

*For centuries the Lhasa only existed in Tibet, and it was used to guard monasteries

*The Lhasa arrived in the West in the 20th century

*The Tibetan Spaniel who probably descended from the Lhasa and Chinese Spaniel and was also used to guard palaces and monasteries and was considered sacred.

*All the dogs that had originated in the Tibetan area (Tibetan Terrier, Tibetan Spaniel, Tibetan Mastiff, and Lhasa... etc;) almost all have two characteristics in common, the long thick coat (to protect them from the rigorous climate), and the tail curled up over the back.

 

*Even though the Pekingese looks almost exactly like the Tibetan Spaniel,  and is a descendant, it is not considered a Tibetan dog, just a descendant of one

*The albino and liver colored Pekingese is outlawed

*The Tibetan Spaniel is on the list of miscellaneous breeds in the AKC.

*The Tibetan Spaniel is not a very very rare breed, it is rare, but is still not pictured in many books

*Lhasa Apsos were kept as special guards in the temples while the Mastiff was chained by the door
