Your concern is not to bring the attacker down but rather to create a distraction allowing you to get away.
The quickest and simplist thing to do when you are being held against your will is to break the person's nose.  This will cause the eyes to tear giving you a chance to run. If your attacker is persistant remember the sensitive areas of the body the instep, nose, groin, eyes, and throat
If they attack you from behind you need to get them facing you the way to do this is to twist one of the arms that you can reach, doing this has him loosen his hold on you and giving you enough power to turn into the person.  From here a quick punch in the stomach will knock the air out of your attacker allowing you to run. Whatever you do remember when the victim is down do NOT continue beating them.  This is self defense when they are down you are no longer defending yourself.
I they attack you head on they will most likely being looking at your face giving you the perfect oppurtunity to go for a leg movement.  Thrust your knee upwards you should make contact just below the breastbone.  Make sure you use your knee never your foot. ( If you use your foot and they block you by grabbing it your in the perfect position for them to take you down) After knocking the wind out of them they will most likely bend over slightly giving you a height advantage, this is when you use your elbow and strike them in the center of their back on the spine, this will position your hand by their head, using the hand by their head push their neck down this will make them fall onto the floor in fear of you snapping their neck, giving you a chance to get away.
